Day Trip to Spiral Jetty

I am playing catchup on my blog, so sorry that we are months behind.  On March 13th, Porter had the day off of school and so we decided to take a little impulsive day trip to Spiral Jetty.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Spiral Jetty, it was created by Artist Robert Smithson's in (1970) and is located at Rozel Point peninsula on the northeastern shore of Great Salt Lake. Using over six thousand tons of black basalt rocks and earth from the site, Smithson formed a coil 1,500 feet long and 15 feet wide that winds counterclockwise off the shore into the water.  It is pretty fascinating.  Depending on the water levels of when you go, the jetty is either dry or can be submerged by water. When we went, it was completely dry.   I have wanted to go for quite some time now and it was fun to finally go.  We wish that Paul could have come with us, but he had to work.. so we will have to go again with him sometime soon. The trip there took about 2 1/2 hours and the kids did great.  Once we got there, the boys had so much fun running around and playing on the jetty and then playing by the water.  It was such a beautiful warm sunny day.

 

Every time I am by the Great Salt Lake, it is always incredible to me to see the miles and miles of salt.

We were lucky enough for the weather to be warm enough to splash a little bit.  The boys were so excited to play in the water for the first time this Spring/Summer.  They had a blast.

There were lady bugs everywhere, and Porter and Kaden were fascinated by them.  I bet they caught over 30 of them while we were there.

After playing in the water, the boys ran around the spiral jetty rocks one more time.  Porter had me time him to see how fast he could run through the spiral over and over again.  He loved it. 

On the way home, we passed the Golden Spike Historical Site & Museum.  This historic site commemorates the completion of the first Transcontinental Railroad where the Central Pacific Railroad and the Union Pacific Railroad met on May 10, 1869.  The final joining of the rails spanning the continent was signified by the driving of the ceremonial Golden Spike.  The museum was closing soon after we arrived, so we were only able to be there for a couple of minutes, but it was very interesting to see.
